Grow Your Small Business

The key to growing your small business is to transition from being an artist to being a business machine. To grow you have to move from creating occasional masterpieces to mass producing them. The ability to transform that artistry and magic into a predictable, controlled and scalable process is a rare skill. Almost as rare as the ability to recognize that you need help and seeking it out.

You will never do anything in this world without courage. It is the greatest quality of the mind next to honor. Aristotle

Trendy articles on leadership and its defining characteristics are plentiful. Leadership has been over analyzed and every one wants a leader to reflect their own special cherished attributes. We have servant leaders, emotional leaders, leaders with emotional bravery, democratic leaders, authoritarian leaders and the list goes on. All are valuable attributes but Courage is the fundamental trait of leadership. Show me a cowering leader and I’ll show you a weak follower. Leaders make difficult contrarian decisions, leaders travel the road less travelled, leaders stand apart from the masses, leaders have unique visions and push forward often at great personal cost. History has been made by the brave men and women who had the courage to lead. President Lincoln and Harry S Truman, Steve Jobs and Henry Ford, Rosa Parks and Mother Teresa, Martin Luther King Jr. and Lt. Michael Murphy, Katherine Johnson and Marie Curie are all prime examples of courageous leaders. Who is your courageous leader?

Being lean can be uncomfortable

Penguins use blubber to insulate themselves from the cold. Over staffing is the blubber of inefficient companies. It insulates employees from making decisions and creates bureaucracy, apathy and a lack of ownership. Are you lean enough that your employees feel the cold? Are they owners of problems and seekers of solutions?

The more things change, the more they stay the same

Change management has always been the hidden key to the success of substantial projects. In particular projects that challenge our traditional ways of working. This classic article “The Hard Side of Change Management” was published by the Harvard Business Review and authored by:

Harold L. Sirkin

Perry Keenan

Alan Jackson

It is even more relevant in today's ever changing world than it was back in 2005.
